    (

calligraphy by Dong Zuobin, dated likely mid-20
    th
century or earlier. Not framed but attached to a paper board, the calligraphy

    divination
was done in red and black. There was a translation of the bone script into modern Chinese script by the author. The calligraphy was signed and sealed at lower left.
    Dong Zuobin (
    董作賓
    ,
1895–1963) was a Chinese archaeologist, as a leading authority on the study of oracle bone script and turtle shell inscriptions of the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC). In 1928, he supervised the first systematic dig of Anyang, the Shang capital. Through years, his important research achievements included giving ten criteria for dating an inscription within the Shang dynasty, dividing the evolution of the oracle bone writing into five stages, deciding the genealogy and chronology of the twelve Shang kings who ruled Anyang for 273 years since 1384 BC, correlating various Shang calendars with lunar eclipses, and working out the dates of individual reigns and the rounds of ancestral sacrifice.
    Oracle Bone Script (
    甲骨文
, Jiaguwen) was carved on tortoise shells or animal bones and widely used in pyromantic divination in the Shang dynasty (circa 18th - 12th century, BCE), which was the earliest known form of Chinese writing directly ancestral to the modern Chinese script.
