The Corps of the Italian Prison Constabulary was established by King Vittorio Emanuele I on March 18, 1817. In 1990 it was renamed Polizia Penitenziaria (Penitentiary Police), and ensures the security of Italian prisons, keeping unauthorized people out and preventing escape by prisoners. It also maintains order inside prisons, handles the transportation of inmates to and from prison and to court or medical appointments, and manages work and education programs for inmates. Today it consists of 43,000 officers and 206 prisons.
The reverse features a bust of a uniformed policeman of the Corps of the Italian Prison Constabulary and the inscription "POLIZIA PENITENZIARIA".
The obverse shows the coat of arms of the Corps of the Italian Prison Constabulary and its motto in Latin "DESPONDERE SPEM MVNVS NOSTRVM" (to guarantee hope is our duty).
